Spain’s Tax Agency Plans to Seize Cryptocurrencies to Settle Debts

The Ministry of Finance proposes legal reforms to allow the execution of digital assets.

The Spanish Ministry of Finance is intensifying its oversight on cryptocurrencies and other digital assets by proposing a legal reform that enables the seizure of such assets to pay off tax debts. Announced by Minister María Jesús Montero, the initiative aims to modify the General Collection Regulation to facilitate the seizure of digital assets. This move comes as part of broader efforts to combat tax fraud, with proposed modifications already submitted to the European Union for review. The reform would also involve the collaboration of electronic money and payment institutions in tax collection processes, marking a significant step towards integrating cryptocurrency transactions into Spain’s legal and fiscal frameworks.
